During Softcon 2016 and the first Big Data Analytics Conference, discussions on the capability of IT graduates to meet the demand of the IT-BPM industry came about, along with how much the existing IT curriculum needs to evolve.

Given the various disruptions in 2016, it is no longer a question on whether the academe is lacking in supplying the industry with graduates, who have the skill level to match its needs. In the field of Analytics alone, the depth of training students have on algorithms needs to be assessed. Industry players also expressed concern on the need to evaluate even the rudimentary skills expected of a software engineer.

Wanting to help address the concerns from both the academe and the industry, Pointwest started a CSR project — a Curriculum Enhancement and Faculty Engagement Program. The program aims to address requests from the academe in fine-tuning their IT curriculum, or enabling their faculty, or both.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), being one of the partners of Pointwest’s Industry-Academe Partnership Program, requested Pointwest to give a presentation during the curriculum review for the College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) at Fernandina 88 Hotel on December 5, 2016.

PUP asked Pointwest to modify their CCIS curriculum to include Software Testing. Pointwest’s Arlene Canlas, Head of Software Testing (Center of Excellence), and Senior Software Test Analyst Hannah N. were the first ones to deliver their presentation on the inclusion of Software Testing as an independent discipline.

Before discussing Software Testing,  Ms. Canlas presented the roadmap to having a Quality Assurance (QA) Career. Hannah then discussed Systematic Software Testing and Selenium, one of the testing tools she specializes in. The last part of the presentation was done by Arlene, who discussed the testing services and QA services, along with the current testing trends such as agile testing and quality engineering.

Faculty members expressed much interest on how testing is done in the industry, such as test-first approach and the various testing tools.

Hannah, who is a PUP alumna, felt honored that she discussed Software Testing to her former professors. One even approached her after the discussion and told Hannah how proud she was of her.

“PUP and Pointwest have been my torches in learning. I am joyful that the two entities are working together.” Hannah, Senior Software Test Analyst
